Having recurring alcohol related legal troubles, such as being jailed for driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or for physically harming someone while drunk
Continued drinking in spite of having continuing relationship problems that are caused or intensified by the alcohol consumption.
Alcohol dependency, or alcohol dependence, is the most extreme form of alcohol abuse. It is a chronic illness characterized by the consumption of alcohol at a level that interferes with mental and physical health and with friends and family and social responsibilities. An alcoholic will likely continue to consume in spite of severe health, family, or legal problems.
Alcoholism is influenced by both hereditary and environmental variables. Alcoholism is chronic: It lasts an individual's lifetime. It typically follows a predictable course and has identifiable symptoms.
Alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency cut across ethnicity, gender, and race. Nearly 14 million people in the United States are dependent on alcohol. More guys than females are alcohol dependent or have alcohol troubles. Alcohol problems are highest amongst young people ages 18-29 and lowest amongst adults ages 65 and older. People who start drinking at an early age have a greater chance of establishing alcohol troubles at some point in their lives.
Alcohol's effects differ with age. Slower reaction times, troubles with hearing and seeing, and a lower tolerance to alcohol's effects put more mature people at greater threat for falls, vehicle crashes, and other types of accidental injuries that might result from drinking alcohol. More than 150 medicines interact harmfully with alcohol.
In addition, chronic alcohol abuse takes a heavier physical toll on females than on males. Alcohol dependence and associated medical problems, such as heart, brain, and liver damage, progress more quickly in women.
Alcoholism, or alcohol dependence, is the most severe type of alcohol abuse. More guys than females are alcohol dependent or have alcohol issues. Individuals who begin drinking at an early age have a higher possibility of forming alcohol problems at some point in their lives.
Slower reaction times, troubles with hearing and seeing, and a lower tolerance to alcohol's effects put older individuals at higher danger for falls, automobile crashes, and other types of injuries that might result from alcohol consumption.
