A computerized search was performed through PubMed, EMBASE, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and the VIP Chinese Journal of Science and Technology database (VIP) from 1954 to the present, using the following search keywords: ABO blood group, ABO blood type or Rh, and breast cancer. Manual searches were done by reviewing the reference lists of retrieved studies and review articles were identified for additional potentially eligible studies. The languages of publication were restricted to English and Chinese. CaseCcontrol studies published as original articles and containing numbers of cases and controls in different ABO blood types and Rh factors were included in this study. The studies had to be independent. In case of multiple reports on the same population or subpopulation we retained [http://www.selleckchem.com/products/Everolimus(RAD001).html Everolimus molecular weight] the estimates from the most recent or most informative reports. Information was carefully extracted from all the eligible studies independently by two reviewers (Miao and Zhou). The following variables were extracted from each study if available: first author's name, publication year, country of origin, study design, numbers of cases and controls in different ABO blood types and Rh factors and numbers of familial breast cancer and sporadic breast cancer in different blood types. After disagreement was resolved by discussion, all the data were agreed by consensus. Crude odds ratios (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to assess the association between different blood types [http://www.selleckchem.com/products/PD-0332991.html this website] and risk of breast cancer. Between-study heterogeneity was tested using Q statistics.[31] If P?[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cilengitide Cilengitide] to be significant. When between-study heterogeneity was absent, a fixed-effects model (the MantelCHaenszel method)[32] was used to calculate the pooled OR. Otherwise, a random-effects model (the DerSimonianCLaird method)[33] was selected. Publication bias was investigated by funnel plots in which the standard error of log (OR) of each study was plotted against its log (OR). Funnel plot asymmetry was assessed using Egger's linear regression test, a linear regression approach to measure funnel plot asymmetry on the natural logarithm scale of the OR. A P-value of less than 0.05 was considered significant.[34] All analyses were performed using the software Stata version 11.0 (Stata Corporation, College Station, TX, USA). We identified 114 citations from the PubMed, EMBASE, CNKI and VIP databases. Of these articles, 71 were excluded because the title and/or abstract were not relevant to the end-point of this study; 29 were excluded because there was not enough data or the language used was neither English nor Chinese. Finally, 14 studies[17-22, 24-28, 35-37] were eligible for evaluation of the breast cancer risk of ABO blood types, including 9665 breast cancer patients and 244?768 healthy controls (Table?1). A breast cancer risk associated with the Rh factor was reported in three studies.
