Do You Know What Skin Type You Are? We get so many women asking us what their skin type is that it’s possible that you don’t really know what yours is! In fact, if you don’t know which it is the chances are you aren’t doing your skin any favours. Wonder why you keep getting spots on your chin but the rest of your face is dry? Maybe you had oily skin in your teens and you’ve carried on believing that’s your skin type? Or you could be using a moisturiser that’s too rich for your complexion so you think you have spot-prone skin? Perhaps your skin is dry and flaky but you aren’t sure what skincare routine you should be following? Well, it is really important to understand what your skin type is so you always look your best. It’s also vital to regularly check your skin routine because many factors alter skin. These could be down to hormonal changes such as the menopause; of course if you’re younger, the onset of teenage years will change your skin. If you are pregnant then skin again changes and so does ageing change skin type. As you age, your skin changes because oestrogen levels drop, generally skin becomes drier and lines more apparent than ever before, this is the reason you get lines, wrinkles and skin loses its elasticity. At all of these times of life it is vital to check your skincare routine suits your skin-type. Knowing your skin type helps you find the right skincare routine and make sure your skin looks terrific. Here’s Naturology’s guide to finding out… anti wrinkle serum hyaluronic acid

Do you have normal skin? If you do – then congratulations! Your skin will almost always look great. You won’t be prone to many spotty break-outs (except maybe when your period is due or perhaps during times of stress). When you’re under 40, your skin will feel soft, supple and bounce back easily if you pinch it gently between your fingers. Even over 40 you will always have beautiful skin. It’s even and smooth with a good colouring, no open pores and if you care for it well, it remain looking good. Lucky you! Our tips for normal skin are as follows: • Keep doing what you’re doing! It works but check your skin regularly for life changes which may alter it • Use a light moisturiser according to your time of life and always cleans and tone but choose a normal skin product that won’t encourage oil or dryness • Using serum will penetrate into your skin and help keep it looking its best Try Naturology’s Vitamin C serum which is 98% natural and it will keep your skin elastic, soft, supple and strong • Only use natural products to avoid putting harmful chemicals into your skin (avoid phthalates, parabens and sulphate as these interfere with hormone production – your hormones are fine as they are!) • Drink plenty of water to cleanse your system from the inside out • Keep up using sunscreen! Do you have dry skin? Dry skins sufferers will have patches of flaky looking skin and foundation will dry it out even more. If you have a dry skin, go for a foundation or tinted moisturiser with a light sheen to lift it. While dry skin looks fine in your teens, 20’s and 30’s as you enter into your 40’s and above, dry complexions highlight fine lines and open pores. Some dry skin is prone to irritation such as dermatitis or eczema and on skin like this you should use very gentle products, always go for natural products without phthalates, parabens or sulphate (as these aggravate skin). Choose unperfumed products too and never use soap on your face as it will dry it out further. For skin irritation it might be better to go to the doctor and get a mild medicated lotion to help soften these areas. Don’t be tempted to over moisturise because this can cause spots – just because you have dry skin doesn’t mean you won’t get spots either but because your skin isn’t oily, spots will often lay under the skin causing hard lumps. A good skin routine will combat dryness. • Always wear sunscreen under your moisturiser or make up as the sun dries skin out • Choose a good quality moisturiser to boost skin’s hydration and plump it up • A night cream is essential for your skin type, something such as our Naturology Age Reform Night Cream which is a natural product and promises to restore the balance of moisture in your skin, protecting it from free radicals overnight. As your skin is dry, there is a tendency toward lines and wrinkles, this night cream will hydrate and boost so your skin looks wonderful in the morning, and all day long • Your skin type doesn’t need toner which can often dry it out • Never use soap on your face as it will dry out your skin even more • Drink water – we keep saying this but water not only flushes out the body from toxins, it also hydrates skin and smooths it as well as plumping it up

Do you have oily skin? a skin cream with vitamin c

If you have oily skin you will see oily patches on your face. Your face will look shiny too and the areas to watch out for especially will be your nose, forehead, cheeks and chin (this is where oil tends to gather). You will probably have enlarged pores as well. While oily skin is problematic and prone to spots, there’s plenty you can do to fight the zit battle! On the positive side – your skin won’t age as much as those with dry complexions and you will find that because you have an oily skin, your skin will remain plump for longer – so where your dry skinned friends have lines and wrinkles you won’t (or you won’t have as many!) If you have oily skin here are our top tips: • Use a matt foundation or oil-free tinted moisturiser • Use a light translucent powder to set your make up and remove the shine • Cleanse, tone and moisturise (toner helps draw out impurities) – don’t miss out on moisturiser which many oily skinned ladies do! • Use a gentle cleanser and use a toner especially designed for oily skins. Moisturise using something such as our Naturology non-greasy Stem Cell Active Youth Moisturiser. Despite what you might think, serum will not increase oil production and in many cases it fights spots as it is packed with goodness and will make skin shine in the right way. Use Age Defying Vitamin C Serum if you are prone to some lines and it balances the skin’s PH so combats oil production • Drink 2 litres of water to flush out toxins from your skin • Avoid fatty, greasy food

Do you have a mix of oily and dry skin? Then you have what’s known as combination skin which is what most women have. It’s a mixture of both oily and dry and you will have traces of oil on your nose, forehead and chin (often referred to as the T-Zone). This is the type of skin that has to be careful not to put too much moisture into it to cause break outs or too little to dry it out so you really need to pay good attention to your skincare regime to make sure you get it spot on! If you have combination skin here’s what you can do: • Drink 2 litres of water a day to flush out impurities and so cleanse the skin from the inside • Cleanse, tone and moisturise but don’t use much toner on your dry areas • Choose a natural moisturiser without chemicals and with vitamins and anti-oxidants. Our Stem Cell Active Youth Moisturiser contains vitamin C which firms and heals the skin and exfoliates dryness. It also has Hibiscus which smooths skin, increasing elasticity and because it is non-greasy it won’t encourage oil production • Use a light foundation or tinted moisturiser and only use a little on your oily areas. You could also dust a bronzer or mineral powder across your T-Zone to minimise oily appearance Do you have sensitive skin? You know if you have sensitive skin – it’s the type of skin that reacts to many products. It can be confused with dry skin but the difference is it becomes inflamed and irritated often. You might find many areas where it is red or prone to allergic reaction. If it feels tingly or itchy after using a product then you must stop because your skin is having a reaction. As your skin is fragile it needs special care and only natural products to stop it becoming aggravated. For eczema and dermatitis it’s important to see a doctor and get prescribed lotions and creams. • Never use anything other than natural products on your skin (unless under prescription) • Choose Naturology’s serum and moisturisers, both of which are at least 95% natural and don’t contain phthalates, parabens or sulphate, all of which are potentially harmful to sensitive skin (and all skin) • Test new products on one small area to make sure your skin doesn’t react • Choose skin products rich in Vitamin C which fights free radicals and acts as an antioxidant, ridding the body of impurities and boosting skin- naturally • Other ingredients to look for include Apricot Oil (in our Age Reform Night cream) which nourishes and moisturises protecting against harmful external elements and soothing inflamed skin • Organic Shea butter keeps skin supple and coconut oil plumps up skin that has lost its lustre • Look for organic ingredients, which we have in all Naturology’s products. Organic means entirely natural and not fortified with harmful drugs or chemicals so these type of ingredients will not aggravate your skin • Use mineral make-up and avoid anything that has been tested on animals as it will normally have chemical ingredients We hope this has helped you determine what your skin type is and what products to buy – however, whenever you have a life-change (menopause, pregnancy, stressful situation) your skin may well change so it’s wise to re-evaluate your skin type every now and then to keep it looking Naturology great!
