People will often say that American manufacturing is on the ropes. And there have certainly been setbacks for many sectors. Yet, there are still segments of American industry that should lead to optimism. Let's take for instance American control room furniture manufacturing.

Why might we look at control room furniture? For starters, it is classified as a durable good. As you may be aware, durable goods are indicative of the health of an economy. When companies have faith in the strength of the economy, they buy more durable goods. It works both ways though, a company without faith in the economy will put off durable goods orders. Put another way, companies invest in long-lasting products when they envision a healthy economy that lasts at least as long as the product itself. Beyond this, there is a proven correlation between a healthy GDP and a healthy number of durable goods orders.

This is good news for the economy. Furniture factory orders were up by 13% this April compared with last April. Numbers are usually analyzed year-to-year in this way as month-to-month can cause statistical noise. Comparing April-to-April, we see that not just orders have increased, but that shipments and order backlogs are up by the same percentage. Taking a longer look at the first four months of the year, reveals a more modest increase, but still 5%. A 5% increase is a substantial increase. Consider that Durable Goods Orders usually shift by tenths of a percent year-to-year.

I should note here that these numbers are for residential furniture orders. In my opinion, they should also be representative of the control room furniture sector's growth margins on a proportional scale. The reason for this is that shipments of durable goods is also predictive of GDP. As such, shipments were up more than 5% in the first third of 2014.

These

numbers suggest that American industry is alive and growing. In fact, it is growing as well as it ever has when you look at specific markets such as control room furniture. The reason for much of this growth is the commitment of American manufacturers like Inracks in Buffalo, NY and their commitment to the ideal of Made in the USA.
