Ronald McDonald House Hamilton became a reality in response to McMaster University Medical Centre’s new designation as a Children’s Hospital. The initial efforts of the Junior League of Hamilton-Burlington, McDonald’s Canada and many more saw to it that kids staying at the hospital are never far from their families.

The now 40-bedroom House is open after a massive expansion that has more than doubled the amount of families they are able to serve each night. A necessary expansion considering the waiting list, at the original 15 bedroom House, could run as long as 1,325 families.

The House is operated with the help of both staff and volunteers who offer everything from fresh-baked goods to laundry supplies and home-cooked meals. These simple things make it possible for families to focus on their number one priority – their sick child. Families are asked to contribute a nominal fee of $12 per night to stay at the House, though no family is ever turned away due to an inability to pay.
